Jurassic Island roars to life but its look is extinct

jurassic-islandThere are no prizes paid out for guessing the theme of this Ash Gaming/Playtech video slot.

The dinosaur themed slot certainly doesn’t offer you the glitz and glamour that its Hollywood cousin – Microgaming’s Jurassic Park slot – can do, but that doesn’t necessarily make it a total flop, either.

In fact, visually Jurassic Island is alright. Even from a gameplay perspective, this slot is pretty decent to play. The only downside is its design. All too often, Ash Gaming has a bright idea but fails to follow it through.

We thought that would change when Playtech snapped up Ash Gaming, but it seems as though the industry giants don’t interfere too much with the development of new Ash Gaming slots.

Jurassic Island is a poor man’s Jurassic Park, although one which does have the capacity to offer you nifty features and stunning cash prizes when you spin its reels, which cost between $0.25 per spin, and $125 per spin. What else can we tell you about it?

What we love

One of the things we love about this slot is its features. Don’t misunderstand here. A simple slot shouldn’t have featured quite like this, so the fact that Ash Gaming has worked them into it is really cool.

You have wild symbols which can expand to occupy whole reels, but only when they appear in winning combinations on the second, third, and fourth reels. There are also scatters which can trigger a free spins feature, too. In fact, there are three free spin bonuses for you to choose from.

A Multiplier bonus can offer you up to 30 games with wins tripled, whilst a Carnivore bonus offers up to 30 spins with only the high paying symbols present on the reels.

A Raptor bonus offers you up to 40 free spins with stacked expanding wilds. The Hot Shot bonus is a fourth bonus, but it is an instant win game, very reminiscent of the hunting stage in the DOS game, Oregon Trail. It’s well worth a laugh if nothing more.

What we do not like

Each of the free spin bonuses offers a different challenge in terms of variance. Some are better suited to some players rather than others, depending on your balance. It is best you read our review to learn more about this.
We’re also not huge fans of the look of this game.

There are dinosaurs that are well-placed, but also giant apes, and killer plants which just look silly. The graphics are crisp, but Ash Gaming hasn’t followed on properly with its theme, and the wagering bar looks simply awful.

Worth playing?

For its gameplay, you may well wish to give Jurassic Island a few spins. From a visual perspective, you are never going to get that shine and stylish look like you do with Microgaming’s Jurassic Park slot.

Jurassic Island is not a bad effort, though, and is deserving of slightly more praise than it will perhaps get from players when it is launched.
