iSoftBet Just Launched Mega Boy Slot Machine
Mega Boy is the most recent release by iSoftBet; this is a 16-bit retro adventure meant to tug at the strings of your nostalgia, hoping you’ll loosen the strings of your purse in the process. Mega Boy’s entire theme is definitely a shout out to SNES-type gaming, the mainstay of late 80’s and early 90’s videogames.
Luckily, Mega Boy manages to evoke those feelings and memories without ending up looking like a cheap knockoff. This game emulates the style and the substance whilst staying true to itself, no need to copy anyone.
Well, there aren’t any egregious “inspirations” in this game, anyhow. Perhaps the game’s backdrop, which is perhaps too Super Mario-looking for comfort, is the only bold case of “influence” from a game from the era Mega Boy seeks to celebrate.
Mega Boy’s developer, iSoftBet, produces both online and mobile games for electronic casinos. They have a nice portfolio of original titles just like Mega Boy, including Astro Magic and Luxury Rome HD. iSoftBet also develops a number of branded games, of a very high quality, like 24, The Love Guru, Nacho Libre, and Basic Instinct.
What We Love
Mega Boy is a very solid game; it has a great design, and also great gameplay. It most exciting feature involves the free spin rounds. Mega Boy has two free spin round modes, which are accessed the same way; there’s a special rectangular wild symbol that appears only on the center reel, reel 3.
This symbol can bear the likeness of either of the two characters the feature in the game, an orange beast with large ram horns (which triggers “level one”, the first mode), or an elf-like creature with a purple hat (which triggers “level two”, the second mode). The special symbol must land dead center, in the middle position, to activate the free spin modes. Both modes are fairly similar, having 10 free spins and randomly chosen multipliers and “power ups”.

The difference lies in the “power ups”, which vary between the two modes. In both modes the power ups mostly expand wild symbols, or replace existing symbols for wilds, but the specific ways (expanding wilds in an upright cross shape in Lvl 1, or diagonally in Lvl 2) are different in each one.
This game’s visual design is also a main selling point for us. We love how iSoftBet managed to craft a theme that manages to remind you of old 16-bit games without overtly copying any specific game. Also, the fact that Mega Boy is a cheerful looking game without falling into gaudy or ridiculousness is a great plus for us. The fact that its jackpot is 50000 coins doesn’t subtract any points either, I should say.
What We Do Not Love
We like this game; we may not think it’s the greatest game out there, but it’s definitely a good game. However, we can’t help but feel like the video game aspect of its theme could have been better explored and developed further.
Adding a minigame or two, perhaps as preambles for the two free spin “levels” or as standalones, could have made this game much better. We just feel that iSoftBet missed an opportunity here to make a truly fantastic game.
Worth Playing?
This game has interesting features, a compelling theme, and good payouts, the Holy Trinity of a good virtual slot machine. Even if you’re not feeling drawn by nostalgia for your Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo days, or you’re too young to have had those days, this game is certainly worth trying out. Kudos to iSoftBet for a great game.
