This is the Time to Start Dancing in Rio with WMS
Dancing in Rio has curiously enough made its bow during the month the Olympic Games were held in Rio de Janeiro.
There is certainly no coincidence behind that move, as WMS Gaming aim to bring in as large an audience as possible for the carnival themed slot machine game, when everybody has “Olympic fever”. Will it work? Probably not.
Whilst the new 5-reel, 40-line slot does have some nice features, and features plenty of colour, it really is a case of if you’ve seen one, you’ve seen them all.
There is precious little originality and creativity in the Dancing in Rio slot, and that will certainly hurt its chances of being a major success. Remember, this is not an Olympic themed slot but a carnival themed one, so there is a small chance it may live beyond the games.
What Dancing in Rio does have is the ability to make you rich, with a total of 5 non-progressive jackpots, and one progressive available. The mechanism behind triggering these pots is about as original as you are going to get with the Dancing in Rio slot, which launched this month at all good casinos carrying WMS Gaming software.
What we love
We do love that progressive jackpot system. Players will find both green and red triggers on the reels. In order to win the progressive, they need to be wagering more than 2.00 per spin, and at the same time land 4 green triggers on the first four reels, and a red trigger on the fifth reel.

Any other combination will see you win one of the 5 non-progressive jackpots, or nothing at all. Whilst winning the progressive is tricky and challenging and almost never happens, you do stand a good chance of landing one of the marginally smaller non-progressive prizes.
What we do not like
There are more things we don’t like, than things we do about Dancing in Rio. For a kick-off, the slot has too many symbols on its reels.
There are potentially 5 scatter icons on the reels of this slot, and whilst they all trigger free spins, the sheer number of them does tend to mean that you stand a lessened chance of landing winning combinations on the reels, let alone a progressive.
Also, the wild symbols are therefore unable to be as effective as you might like them to be. Since wilds cannot replace scatters, there is a large number of symbols in the Dancing in Rio slot which are unaffected by the wild. Again, this lessens your chance to win.
Worth playing?
On the one hand, WMS Gaming would have you believe that they are going out of their way to ensure that you stand a better chance of winning than normal with this slot. However, we all know that the excess of scatters makes that unlikely, for the reasons we have mentioned above.
Because of this, and the lack of originality in the other features, one cannot help but feel that Dancing in Rio will only be able to provide a brief spot of excitement over the summer holidays, before disappearing into the abyss, rather like the Olympics.
