Mega Boy

mega-boy-slot-logoiSoftBet has a new original content title, called Mega Boy. This new game will bring back memories thanks to its retro 16-bit looks.

Mega Boy is clearly meant to evoke nostalgia in the hearts of many players who grew up in the 80’s and early 90’s, but that doesn’t mean that this game draws any design cues or inspiration from any specific game, or at least not overtly. Mega Boy is simply aiming for feels, not references.

The reel symbols are mostly your traditional symbols, even some old timey fruit slot machine symbols; all pixelated, of course. Mega Boy is truly retro through and through.

Developer

iSoftBet is a developer of online and mobile games for casino operators. They have a line of original content games, like Mega Boy, that include Astro Magic and Luxury Rome HD.

They also have developed branded titles such as 24, Nacho Libre, The Love Guru, and Basic Instinct. iSoftBet is probably one of the best developers in the market right now, consistently releasing titles of high quality visual design.

How To Play It

This is a five by three reel slot, with 25 pay lines. Its user interface is dead simple, like the vast majority of slot machines in general. The bottom of the screen holds all relevant user interface elements. At the left side, you have a info button for consulting the pay table.

Next to it, you have a display with your current bet, then a setting to adjust coin value. Dead center we have the spin button, and just to its right we have the auto spin button.

Hitting auto spin opens up a menu where you can set your preferences for the spin, like number of spins, and wins and/or losses to stop the round. Mega Boy is as simple as it can get in the user interface department.

Special Features

The most important special feature in Mega Boy are its two free spin modes. That’s right; there are two different free spin modes in this game. Both are triggered in the same manner; a special wild symbol can appear in the middle reel, reel 3.

This symbol bears the likeness of either of the game’s two characters, a ram-horned orange beast (which triggers “level one”), and a purple-hatted creature (which, in turn, triggers “level two”). If the symbol lands at the dead center of the reels, this will trigger the free spin rounds. If not, it works like a regular wild.

The two modes are fairly similar; both have 10 free spins, with multipliers and “power-ups” chosen at random during each spin.

However, the power ups will vary according to the character. The power ups mostly consist of expanding wilds, it should be noted. This is a fresh spin on bonus rounds, managing to improve on a long-established mechanic, without losing its familiarity.

Maximum Payouts

This game’s jackpot is a juicy 50000 coins. Coin value can be set between 0.01 euros and 0.20 euros, making the actual monetary value of the jackpot range between five hundred (500) euros and ten thousand (10,000) euros. Those are very respectable numbers indeed.

Summary

Mega Boy is a nice attempt at nostalgia grabbing. It manages to bring back memories to a simpler era of gaming, without coming across as a cheap knockoff of a well-known intellectual property.

Its free spin features, with both levels, are a nice take on the traditional bonus round, managing to repackage it a way that is both familiar and innovative. Definitely, Mega Boy is a game worth trying out, even if you’re no fan of retro.
