Based on the Danish children’s cartoon of the same name by Ivan Sølvason and Niels Krogh Mortensen, this slot tells the tale of a troll from Scandinavian folklore who fights evil. Created in the 90s, the friendly troll takes centre stage in the cartoony-designed slot.
For most non-Scandinavians, this may just appear to be another cartoon themed slot, but for those who grew up with Hugo, this may be a welcome trip down memory lane.
Play ‘n Go – Scandinavians themselves – are the designers behind Hugo. This autumn, they will be releasing a number of new slots, several of which have strong Scandinavian themes. Hugo certainly looks the part, but there are elements one can quickly grow frustrated with.
For instance, the tapping on the screen of the title character when the slot is not being played is quite irritating. By and large, though, there’s more to like than not about this new Play ‘n Go slot.

How to play
Just like virtually all Play ‘n Go slots, players can choose to alter their coin values, the number of coins they wager per line, and the number of lines they play with. There are 10 of those spread over the 5 reels of the Hugo slot.
All of those option sit within a wooden menu bar, located below the reels. A number of other options are also present in that menu bar, and these include the ability to place a maximum bet, view the paytable, and auto play a number of spins. Minimum and maximum wagers in the Hugo slot range from 1p per line, per spin, up to £100 per spin, respectively.
Wild symbols: Hugo himself acts as a wild symbol in this game. Wilds will double the value of all wins in which they appear, and they can replace all other icons save for scatters and bonus icons. Wilds happen to be the best paying symbols in the slot, too.
Scatter icons: The evil witch, Scylla (known as Afskylia in Danish) is the principal villain, and the scatter icon in Hugo. She can multiply your total stake by 1x, 3x, 15x, or 150x when she appears 2, 3, 4 or 5 times in any position on the reels. Three or more scatters will trigger a free spins bonus round, as is customary in almost all Play ‘n Go slots.
Free spins: Once the free spins bonus begins, players will get to click on either Scylla, Hugolina (Hugoline in Danish, and Hugo’s wife), or Don Croco (another villain), to bag a number of free spins. A total of 3 options are possible.
Depending on your choice, you could end up with 5 spins and3x scatter multipliers, 10 free spins and 2x scatter multipliers, or 15 free spins with a 1x scatter multiplier.
Hugo bonus: If players land 3 treasure chest icons on the first, third, and fifth reels of the slot, they can trigger a petite bonus feature. In this feature, player can work their way through a gold mine, to reach the treasure chamber, and potentially win as much as 100,000 coins. They will lose the feature if Don Croco kicks them out of the mine, though.
The best paying symbol may be the Hugo wild, which is worth as much as 2,000 coins when 5 appear on any active payline, but the top prize is 500,000 coins. As we’ve said, players will need to successfully navigate their way through the bonus round’s mine in order to pocket that kind of cash prize.
Hugo is going to divide the crowd. Some players (namely those who dislike cartoon-style slots) are not going to be terribly impressed with the childish nature of the game. However, Scandinavian players are going to love it for the most part.
Perhaps it is fairer to judge Hugo not on its theme, but on its features then. The features in Hugo are fair to reasonably good. There are decent multipliers, a good spread of wilds, and excellent cash wins via the instant win bonus.
All in all, there shouldn’t be too many players who will find fault with the special features at least, in this Play ‘n Go slot.
