Babushka is the Russian term for a grandmother, or an old lady. In the west, we have come to misidentify this term with the Russian dolls that stack inside one another (they are actually called Matryoshka).
The theme of this video slot is therefore the Russian dolls, and not the lady, but the confusion around the word is so commonplace that the developers of this slot can be forgiven for the title. Babushkas also sounds a lot cuter than Matryoshka, so maybe there is something in that, too.
Thunderkick are the developers behind this video slot. The Swedish online casino software providers have a history of featuring strange numbers of paylines in their games, and Babushkas is certainly no different, featuring 5 reels and a total of 17 paylines in all.
Babushkas is something of a low variance slot machine for Thunderkick, and there aren’t many of those around from this developer.
Thunderkick typically likes to employ expanding wilds, free spins, and bonus games in their slots, but what you get in Babushka does kind of break the mould a little bit.

How to play
Babushkas looks like it is going to be a relatively cheap video slot to play. Don’t expect to have your way with the number of paylines which feature in the game, but you should easily be able to adjust the value of your coins in the game. Babushkas is capable of accepting wagers which can cost anything from 0.10 per spin, up to 100.00 per spin in all.
That’s not a bad return, given that there are 17 paylines. We’re not quite sure how Thunderkick has divvyed that one up, but we’re not complaining.
Wild symbols: Wild symbols are present in the new Babushka slot, and they appear as egg symbols. Eggs can open to reveal winning symbols, and what you really want to find inside them is a Russian bear. If you can land a wild egg icon with a Russian bear inside on the third reel, you will unlock one of three random special features.
Charm Bear Bonus: The Charm Bear bonus will upgrade all of your symbols by 1 level. Upgrading your levels increases the value of your wins. This system of levelling up is designed to be an advantage, but in actuality, it is far more complex than it needs to be, making it a bit of a nuisance. This is especially true since it makes little difference to your overall wins.
Scare Bear Bonus: The Scare Bear bonus actually upgrades your symbols up to 3 times in all. The scale of your upgrade depends on the size of the bear you obtained to unlock the bonus in the first place.
Dance Bear Bonus: This bonus feature is the most simplistic of those to appear in Babushkas. With it, players are going to be able to spin the reels for free, as well as prosper from a guaranteed egg wild icon. Players will start with a total of 7 free spins, during which an egg wild will appear on the central reel (reel 3) throughout the bonus.
So far, as best as we can tell, the maximum cash pay-out you can win the Babushkas video slot is about 400x your total bet. That makes it quite a good paying slot.
Despite the decent non-progressive jackpot, this also appears to be a low variance slot. We’re not quite sure how well high-rolling players are going to take this, then. What we can tell you is that the slot has a RTP rate of 95.8%, and that isn’t bad at all for a Thunderkick developed game.
What can we really say about Babushkas? The title is out of place, but the general idea is right. Thunderkick have tried to be colourful and creative with this slot, and they have to be applauded for that.
The slot itself will be released on August 24, although from what we’ve seen of the game, it’s launch is likely to occur without too many plaudits being thrown its way.
We can see why Babushkas might be worth a look, but we can also easily understand why this slot isn’t a long-term crowd pleaser.
